RMD: Resuscitation | Mentorship | Development was established in 1995 by three medical students at the University of Birmingham (UoB) to provide basic life support (BLS) training to healthcare students through a unique, interdisciplinary, peer-led programme.
Now overseen by a senior faculty of clinical and non-clinical staff, including one of the founders, Prof Jon Hulme, and run by a student faculty of healthcare undergraduates, this peer-led course is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Cited by the General Medical Council (GMC) as an innovative teaching method and endorsed by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, RMD empowers students to become instructors, assessors, and leaders.
Each year, we champion interdisciplinary education, teaching over 1,000 candidates from eight different courses at UoB, across a range of healthcare specialities, with a team of 65 BLS instructors and 20 assessors. We also run an extensive refresher training programme, and RMD Birmingham members provide BLS training and insights across campus for staff, students, and visitors on UoB Open Days.
Our community arm, MiLE, delivers BLS training across Birmingham and beyond.
RMD Birmingham is based at the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham
