RMD: Resuscitation | Mentorship | Development was established in 1995 by three medical students at the University of Birmingham (UoB) to provide basic life support (BLS) training to healthcare students with a unique, interdisciplinary, peer-led programme.
Now overseen by a senior faculty of clinical and non-clinical staff, including one of the founders, Prof Jon Hulme, and run by a student faculty of healthcare undergraduate students, this peer-led course is one of the largest of its type in Europe. Cited by the General Medical Council (GMC) as an innovative teaching method and endorsed by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, we empower students to become teachers, examiners, and leaders. Each year, we recruit and promote interdisciplinary education, teaching over 1000 candidates annually from eight different courses at UoB across a range of healthcare specialties with a team of 65 BLS instructors and 20 assessors.
There is a large refresher training programme and RMD Birmingham members provide BLS training and insights across campus for staff members, students and those visiting on UoB Open Days. Our community arm, MiLE, delivers BLS training across Birmingham and beyond.
RMD Birmingham is based at the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham
